Healing Triggers

Follow my journey as I work on two triggers: a reactive dog who was recently traumatized and myself with a deep wound of fearing loss of sleep.

I have two triggers I struggle with healing: one is recent and belongs to my dog, who got traumatized by other dogs and is now reactive to a specific breed. The other is my own from childhood and exploded into paranoia nine years ago when it destroyed my nervous system. This surrounds my sleep.

Many will suggest avoiding the trigger simply, but what if your trigger is something you have to face? I cannot hold my dog hostage at home or take away his fun by not visiting parks anymore, where he is fine until we meet a particular breed. And I cannot avoid sleeping. The last thing I want to do is make our world smaller or take a pill to avoid the fear of not sleeping.

Healing triggers is complicated, but it can be done. Most therapies will work around them with coping tools which shut them down. This is fine in the short term to help build the capacity to work with them, but in the long run, it creates fragmentation of the psyche and massive survival energy held in the body.

Numerous therapists have failed to help me, so I now begin a journey of facing my triggers head-on. I was not ready for this until now, as I had to reset my nervous system to be able to handle the surge of emotion, survival energy, and shame that comes with a trigger. It is time.

I will catalogue my progress here in hopes that I can help others with the same type of trauma. I hope to use my dog’s trigger as a way into my own, as this one is smaller and more avoidable so that I can titrate it slowly. The experience will teach my nervous system and give it more security and power to handle my own.
