Mother Nature’s Thanksgiving

I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving as it is a colonial holiday. I celebrate Autumn as Nature removes what is unnecessary for a healthy hibernation and a stronger rebirth in the spring. We also celebrate her harvest of summer’s growth.

Nature’s cycles are important lessons. We too, should take this time to release the unnecessary for a more regulated rest this winter. We are meant to live by her laws, not man-made traditions of conquest. Harvest your blessings and toss the rotten.

How to practice a healing thanksgiving

I like to journal outdoors. Find a spot in nature you enjoy, turn off your phone, pick up a pen and paper, and tune into your senses. What are your eyes smiling at? What sweet noises are singing to you? What smells and tastes make you feel nourished and yummy? Bring some tasty drinks or treats with you.

Can you bring all those senses down into your body’s cells rather than keeping them in your head? Find the point of sensation and let it flow down your body and into the earth. Then, feel it rise again up to the trees. This is the embodiment of giving and receiving thanks for all that you’ve experienced.

Does anything uncomfortable arise? This is where you write. Tap into those feelings and let them move onto the paper. What important messages are they telling you? What must you process and remove in the autumnal cleansing to have a restful winter? How can Mother Nature, who surrounds you, help?

I wrote a comprehensive practice to bring Nature’s wisdom into ourselves. This has been a cornerstone of my healing, as she is always there for me. Her power is mine as well. My trauma covered it up. When all else seemed to abandon me, Mother Nature never did. I found myself by returning to her cycles of life.
